Guide to Your First Gardening Job

Everything you need to know before your first gardening job. From preparation and safety to wrapping things up the right way.

Before you head over

Check what needs to be done. Talk through the job with the customer before you go. Are you raking leaves, mowing the lawn, or tending to flower beds? When in doubt, just ask. Better one question too many than one too few.

Book an exact time and stick to it. Make sure the customer books the job in the app. If you're running late or need to cancel, let them know as early as possible. Recurring late cancelations will hurt your rating.

What to wear

  • Clothes you don't mind getting dirty
  • Gloves (they protect against thorns and stinging nettles - trust us). No gloves? Ask the customer if they have a pair to borrow.
  • Sturdy shoes or boots

During the job

No gas-powered machines. Chainsaws, brush cutters, and similar tools are not allowed. Stick to hand tools or electric equipment the customer has shown you how to use. Not sure about something? Just ask.

Check in with the customer as you go. It helps you stay on track and avoid mistakes - and customers genuinely appreciate the updates.

Something unexpected come up? Message the customer right away (through the app if they're not home). Made a mistake? Be honest. Most customers are understanding, but nobody likes being kept in the dark.

When you are done

Clean up. Ask the customer where they want you to leave the garden waste.

Show off the result. If the customer is home, say: "I'm done! Want to take a look?" It always lands well.

Report time in the app right away. This confirms the job is complete and makes sure you get paid.

Ask if they want to book again. Something like: "Want help again next week?" Worst they can say is no. Recurring customers are the easiest way to earn more through Yepstr.
